He will start the role on September 1, reporting to the company's CEO, Allison Kirkby.

BT noted that Leukert will oversee the company's digital transformation, in particular around how the telco utilizes technologies such as AI.

Leukert has been at Deutsche Telekom since 2017, where he has led the transformation of their IT and Digital platforms, products, and services. He has held previous roles at McKinsey & Co., Commerzbank, and the New York Stock Exchange in Germany and the US.

“The opportunity to transform and simplify BT’s operations will improve customer outcomes and drive sustainable business growth, and I am really excited to get started," said Leukert.

BT's Howard Watson will continue to lead the company's digital unit until Leukert joins in September. Watson will juggle the role with his responsibilities as chief networks and security officer.

Deutsche Telekom holds a 12.1 percent stake in BT after buying the stake in the company in 2015.
